University fair in Erbil

Post by Al-Wahedi »

On October 14 & 15, 2011, twenty two (22) American universities participated in a university fair in Erbil. There are about 4,000 higher education institutions in the United States.

This university fair was largely for students interested in graduate and professional study and research (Master and PhD degrees).

Enrollment at these 22 institutions varied from 2,000 at Murray State University (Kentucky) to 36,000 at Michigan State University (East Lansing, Michigan).

Attendance at the fair by local citizens interested in studying in the US was overwhelming. Each university was flooded with potential candidates for admission.

Normally, admission is competitive. Even if students satisfactorily complete application requirements this does not necessarily mean they will be automatically admitted. Universities may not have enough seats to accept all students who meet admission requirements.

After examining educational achievement and following an interview, however, some students were offered admission then and there, on the spot, provided they satisfactorily complete application requirements; they just had to complete the paperwork satisfactorily and they will be admitted. Of course, this also means obtaining a satisfactory TOEFL score and meeting other testing requirements.

Some universities offered conditional admission, meaning that if TOEFL or GRE scores were not high enough the student must study English as a Second Language (ESL) and take the test to earn an adequate score to be fully admitted.

The 22 universities offered Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees in a wide variety of academic programs. Below is a list of 46 programs offered by these 22 universities. No university offered all 46 programs.

This university fair was sponsored by the US State Department which distributed a comprehensive booklet with all the information a student needs to know and the steps to follow in order to begin studying in the United States.
